is developing a major new platform and has established a start-up environment

within Berkeley to contribute to this major initiative.

Siemens Healthineers are currently seeking a Firmware

Engineer to contribute to new platform development within their Molecular

Diagnostics Business. Contributions are expected at the individual level. Must

be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Capable of integrating requirements

from the various stakeholders and have demonstrated judgment to balance the

needs of cost, quality and time-to-market



in RT-qPCR and sample preparation instrumentation development -

through education or experience is highly desired. Experience delivering automated fluorescent

microscopes for biological applications is also desired.

and subassemblies including as many of the following detectors and light sources, low-cost lasers, CMOS cameras, diodes, PMTs.and LEDs.

1. Specific Firmware skill required:

a. Strong understanding of C, C++ and object oriented programming (design

& implementation).

b. Strong understanding of real-time issues such as ISRs and task


c. Strong understanding of embedded IDEs.

d. Strong understanding of FW control of peripherals (e.g., A/D, D/A, USB,

CAN, SPI, ).

e. Strong understanding of RTOS concepts (e.g., ISRs, multi-tasking,

semaphores, queues, ).

f. Ability to comprehend data sheets.

g. Capable of producing succinct documentation.

h. Team member, able to express technical ideas in a group setting.

i. Team member, able to comprehend and comment on technical ideas in a

group setting.

j. Flexible coding style to enhance group consistency.

k. Experience with a standard software archiving system.

l. Experience with a standard bug tracking system.

m. Bare metal board programming strong bare metal board debugging skills

2. Desired experience:

a. ARM processor architecture.

b. IAR embedded IDE.

c. Visual Studio C# or C++.

d. FreeRTOS operating system.

e. CANopen and USB standards.

f. Temperature PID control loop.

g. Motion control.

h. JIRA and GIT.

.Additional Skills Sought

Generate different design alternatives and pick

the best solution.

Design and develop test software for

manufacturing test fixtures.

Work closely with program managers, scientists,

electrical, mechanical and optical engineering teams.

Create technical specification and firmware

requirement specification documents.

Create design documents, design history files,

verification test plans.

Manage source control

Participate in FMEA, worst case analysis and

verification/validation of product/design.

Transfer of designed products to manufacturing

and support any manufacturing and service issues.

Experience in development of products in a life sciences or regulated (CE-IVD, FDA) diagnostic environment is highly desirable.
