**Role Value Proposition:**

The Employee Relations team provides consulting and investigation services, policies and programs to our US managers and employees. Additionally, the ER team provides manager training in a variety of ER related areas. The team will also build global capability ensuring effective response to global crisis and compliance in global employee policies.

This position serves as a subject matter consultant on ER policies, programs and processes and is responsible for the centralized intake of all initial inquiries and issues that are received through the dedicated phone line and department email/fax. The Employee Relations Consultant is also responsible for addressing, resolving, and documenting Tier 1 Employee Relations requests from LOB associates and managers through consultation and interpretation of policies, programs and processes, and effectively escalating complex/specialized issues as appropriate. Independent judgment, strong consultation, customer service, and communication skills are critical to success in this role.

**Key Responsibilities:**

+ Under general supervision, uses independent judgment to provide effective service, support, consultation and resolution of ER inquiries and issues through the informed application of company policies, programs, procedures, and federal/state laws.

+ Provide first level response, consultation and successful resolution of Tier 1 employee relations questions and inquiries, while maintaining an efficient and continuous workflow process and delivering consistent, superior customer service to achieve high levels of customer satisfaction.

+ Assist associates and managers with workforce issues by listening empathetically to concerns, managing expectations, and handling cases in a sensitive and timely manner.

+ Provide consistent guidance and direction to managers in the handling of various employee matters, including disciplinary recommendations, associated documentation, and preparation for employee conversations.

+ Interpret policies to facilitate a common understanding and consistent application throughout the organization.

+ Document inquiries, actions and outcomes into the case management system in accordance with ER Documentation guidelines to ensure appropriate records are retained.

+ Facilitate the effective use of all self-service options, systems, and services, in order to drive rapid resolution and empower the customer.

+ Refer all complex inquires, issues, and potential investigations to appropriate team.

+ Assist in the identification and analysis of employee relations issues, trends and training opportunities for associates and managers.

+ Operate collaboratively and with joint accountability across the ER organization.

+ Perform other duties as assigned or required.

**Essential Business Experience and Technical Skills:**


+ 3+ years of employee relations, HR or equivalent experience.

+ Relentless focus on serving the customer in the most efficient and supportive fashion.

+ Ability to demonstrate independent thinking and work in ambiguous situations.

+ Strong consultative, listening and verbal/written communication skills; ability to convey recommendations and opinions persuasively.

+ Strong negotiation and influencing skills.

+ Demonstrated problem solving ability and judgment skills.

+ Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple priorities and business requirements simultaneously.

+ Strong detail orientation.

+ Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately.


+ Bachelors degree in Human Resources or a related field, or equivalent experience.

+ Knowledge and understanding of federal and state employment laws and regulations in order to provide solutions that minimize risk for MetLife.

+ Demonstrated ability to interpret and apply policies and regulations to a wide variety of situations in the business environment.

+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel PowerPoint); PeopleSoft HCMS and HR HelpDesk a plus.
