3M is seeking an Electrical Engineer for the PSD SCBA/Fire Solutions Lab located in Monroe, North Carolina. At 3M, you can apply your talent in bold ways that matter. Here, you go.







Job Summary:



As a valued added contributor of a product development team, the person hired for the position of Electrical Engineer will use best practices and design methodologies to complete highly complex and challenging projects and other work activities under the direction of a manager or team lead. Responsibilities include the development of complex engineering designs and the application of engineering experience and comprehensive knowledge of engineering principles, theories, and concepts applicable to electronic circuit design and product engineering. The candidate supports multidisciplinary design teams in the electrical engineering analyses, design, drafting, development, testing and sustainment of electromechanical embedded systems.







Circuit design activities include microcontrollers, analog, power distribution, IO, power management, displays, batteries, and other components found in portable, rugged electromechanical products. PCB layout activities include stackup, outline, placement, routing, and preparation for fabrication, EMI/EMC, RFI, and intrinsic safety. The candidate works collaboratively with Mechanical Engineers, Project Engineers, Manufacturing, Logistics, Quality, Test and other technical disciplines as part of a combined integrated team. Interfaces with internal customers and corporate personnel and provides status input for the tracking of assigned tasks.







The person in this role should be a strong communicator who is able to work effectively with peers and management alike in a high paced global environment.







Primary Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:





+ Experienced with electrical schematic design, circuit simulations and multi-layer PCB layouts



+ Support risk management activities to ensure design and process shortcomings are identified and appropriately addressed



+ Experience with low noise, small signal manipulation (amplifying, filtering, scaling, converting, A/D, D/A), and microcontroller peripheral circuit design



+ Design development and analysis of analog, digital and power circuits including 12-24 bits ADCs, 8/16/32bit µPs and µCs, displays, sensors interface, AC/DC power switching, linear and switching power supplies.



+ System knowledge of embedded hardware and firmware design



+ RF design experience desired, ZigBee, Bluetooth, RFID and Wi-Fi



+ Layout of printed circuit boards for products using CAD and custom design rules.



+ Interpersonal and teamwork affinity – willing to collaborate with engineers on the team.



+ Select and specify electronic and electrical components based on function, cost, availability, reliability, etc. for the use in the products manufactured



+ Provide written technical specifications in a clear and unambiguous fashion



+ Experience with statistical tolerance analysis



+ Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the capability of producing innovative electrical and system solutions



+ Knowledge of FMEA principals, Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Assembly, Test, and Usability methodologies



+ Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills



+ Proficient with MS Office software applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project)



+ Apply knowledge of DOE, FMEA, tolerance analysis, simulation, statistical methods and DFM to improve robustness and quality of electronic design









Basic Qualifications:





+ Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university



+ Minimum of three (3) years of experience with electrical design and system applications









Preferred Qualifications:





+ Proficiency in Altium



+ Excellent English-based technical writing and verbal skills



+ RF design experience and knowledge of RF test equipment including spectrum analyzers and signal generators.



+ Experience working in a geographically diverse development organization with multi-disciplinary teams



+ Experience designing and developing embedded electronic systems for commercial, Industrial, and/or military products



+ Design experience in the following areas: Analog, RF and digital circuit design, battery powered embedded systems, and/or high reliability/robust environments



+ Familiarity with Lean Six Sigma philosophy, theory, and application tools / tacticsExperience designing electronics to comply with FCC / IC, UL, CSA, ATEX and IECEx



+ Hazardous Location Circuit Design (Intrinsic Safety), SIL



+ Demonstrated success using lean techniques, DFSS, Kaizen, CTQs, PLM, balanced scorecards, DFMEA



+ Strong analytical and quantitative skills, experience with design simulation and analysis tools



+ DFSS green belt or LEAN certification



+ Demonstrated knowledge designing robust systems to meet or exceed large temperature fluctuations, vibration and drop tests, EMI/ESD and regulatory testing requirements









Location: Monroe, NC



Travel: May include up to 25% domestic/international



Relocation: Is not authorized
