TYPE OF EXAMINATION
A written examination will be administered to all applicants meeting the minimum requirements. This examination will measure the applicant's knowledge of math and of the English language to include basic grammar, spelling, composition, punctuation, and definitions. An open-competitive register will be established. Individuals interested in applying for this job should use an official State of Alabama Application Form and submit it directly to the State of Alabama Personnel Department at the above address. Qualified applicants will be required to complete a written examination, physical ability/agility test, and drug screening. The Department of Corrections personnel office will notify qualified applicants of the date and time of the test and provide other detailed instructions. Questions may be directed to that office at (334) 353-9500. On-site examinations will also be given periodically at major correctional facilities such as Donaldson (Jefferson County), Bibb (Bibb County), Holman/Fountain (Escambia County), and Draper (Elmore County). Applicants interested in testing at one of these locations should contact that facility directly. The written exam will also be offered at our regular statewide test sites.
QUALIFICATIONS NEEDED TO APPLY FOR THIS POSITION
- Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalency.
- Nineteen years of age
NOTE: Copy of high school diploma or GED Certificate will be required by the Department of Corrections at time of appointment. Employees need the ability to develop skills in the care and use of firearms; to assimilate the purpose of the correctional program including discipline and rehabilitation of inmates; to develop skills to control, direct and relate to inmates individually and in groups; to understand and follow written and oral instructions; to recognize sights, sounds and things out of the ordinary and uncommon for a particular area; and to meet special requirements of good reputation and character, emotional stability and freedom from physical defects.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Possession of a valid driver's license. Applicants must pass a physical examination and a physical ability/agility test at time of appointment, and will be required to take a drug test. Applicants must also meet the following requirements of the Alabama Peace Officers' Standards and Training Act to include: (1) nineteen years of age at the time of appointment; (2) good health and physically fit for the performance of duties as a law enforcement officer; (3) no conviction of a felony or domestic violence; (4) must be a citizen of the United States; and (5) if the applicant has been a member of the armed forces of the United States, his/her discharge must be under honorable conditions.
KIND OF WORK
This is correctional security work as a trainee that consists of formal and on-the-job training of the policies and procedures associated with the custody and rehabilitation of inmates within a correctional institution. Employees in this class learn to maintain security of a correctional institution and to observe and participate in the supervision, control, and custody of offenders. Work is performed under close supervision by a training officer or higher ranking correctional officer following established standards and guidelines.

If you do, the State Personnel Director may do several things. One, you may not be given an examination. Two, you may be disqualified after an examination. Three, your name may be removed from a register. Or four, your name may not be certified from the register. (Rules of the State Personnel Board, Chapter 670-x-9). According to the Code of Alabama, 36-26-47, a willful violation of exam security is a misdemeanor. Any person who is convicted of this type of misdemeanor will not get a state job. If they are officers or employees of the state, they will be required to forfeit their office or position for five years.
