Business Intelligence Architect

The Business Intelligence (BI) Architect role will focus on building advanced analytic solutions leveraging Microsoft cloud technologies, machine learning, data science and predictive analytics. This position will help drive the strategic vision, design, implementation, and support of BI software and systems, including integration of databases and data warehouses, and report writing. This includes the following four groups of activities:

Business Intelligence - selecting, blueprinting, gathering requirements, designing, developing, and rolling out BI solutions to end users. The Business Intelligence Architect is also responsible for ensuring high levels of BI availability through support functions and in-depth testing. 

Data - designing, developing, and implementing data models for cloud based solutions and enterprise level applications and systems. These models shall be architected at the following layers: conceptual, logical, business area, and application. This individual will act as the primary advocate of data modeling methodologies and data processing best practices. 

Reports - examine and evaluate reporting requirements for various business units across the organization. This individual will use proven knowledge of specialized reporting tools to develop reporting structures as required. The Business Intelligence Architect is also responsible for proactively generating and compiling reports based on his or her findings, complete with recommended improvements to or new requirements for business processes, operational procedures, and their corresponding reporting structures. 

Administration - will include regular reporting on performance and/or oversight of installations, integration, upgrades, migrations and ongoing maintenance of various Business Intelligence applications. This position will also be responsible for responding to the technical requests of users and project teams pertaining to the applications.


  • Champion the role of BI Architect, define needs for technical and functional standards, promote best practices for tool use, and develop related processes/technical documentation.

  • Manage BI tool set and compel best practices for use with business and project teams. Provide business and project teams with a consistent level of service and problem resolution.

  • Develop performance KPIs, monthly BI status reports, and monitor ongoing costs.

  • Change management procedures (including process documentation, project documentation, test scripts, etc.). 

  • Analyze and improve existing dashboards, reports, and reporting systems.

  • Design and develop Business Intelligence solutions using multi-dimensional and Tabular cubes.

  • Provide training and expertise to business users and other stakeholders on utilizing BI assets for reporting needs.

  • Design functional specs for BI front-end applications including dashboards and reporting, considering appropriate data flow and capture.

  • Evaluate and utilize 3rd party software for development, analysis and reporting.

  • Stay abreast of latest Business Intelligence technologies and tools.

  • Strong intellectual interest and enthusiasm around learning new technologies.

  • Work on special projects as requested.

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Data Science, Computer Science, or similar degree and/or equivalent experience.

  • Proficient with complete MS BI stack, including database design, optimization, and SSIS/SSRS/SSAS (Multi-dimensional and Tabular).

  • Microsoft Certifications preferred - MCSE, MCITP, MCDBA, MCSD, and MCPD.

  • Comprehensive data warehouse analysis and design experience, with full knowledge of data warehouse methodologies and data modeling.

  • Solid understanding of Data Warehouse concepts and technologies such as ETL processes, dimensional modeling, reporting tools and surrogate key generation.  

  • Experience and solid understanding of cloud / networking / distributed computing environments, including creation and deployment with Azure Resource Manager.

  • Proven experience with report writing and technical requirements analysis, business process modeling/mapping and methodology development. 

  • Understanding of analytic tools such as R, Python, SAS, SPSS, RapidMiner, etc. is desirable.

  • Understanding of Web services and object-oriented programming experience in a C#/.NET environment a plus.

  • Must be able to work in a team setting or individually on short, quick sprints and/or long projects.
