Associate Engineer

The City of Tacoma, Public Works Engineering Division is recruiting for the appointive/at-will position of Associate Engineer within the fast-paced and multi-faceted work environment of the Traffic Engineering Section. 
We are seeking a collaborative team member who will be responsible for the enhancement and improvement of the City's transportation system through the following individual and team efforts:  

  • design of improvements for planned capital improvement projects;
  • assisting with design and review of lighting roadways for safety benefits;
  • contribute to the meticulous design of traffic signals and beacons;
  • spearheading an important effort to categorize and document as-built records for traffic signal and streetlight assets;
  • first-hand review of roadway conditions for safety improvements;
  • collection and examination of traffic data to help make informed decisions about roadway controls;
  • review and design of traffic signing and striping;
  • create design plans and construction specifications; and
  • working with citizens concerning neighborhood traffic calming options and evaluations

  • Knowledge of applying engineering principles to the design of traffic signals, beacons and streetlights, especially as they relate to maintenance and construction projects.

Essential Duties:

  • Lead the completion of as-built records for signal and streetlight assets;  coordinate, design and maintain inventories to support asset management systems including: streetlights, traffic signals, traffic warning beacons, school speed zones, roadway markings, signs and similar devices.
  • Provide development review for signal, streetlight and related assets.
  • Customer service support and other traffic engineering functions, such as:  traffic control permits, construction plan review, traffic engineering design, street use permits, and customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Provide calculations, design and plan review for signal and streetlight engineering, channelization, driveways/roadway access, and similar traffic engineering functions.

Four-year degree from an ABET accredited college or university in engineering, planning or related field.

Engineer in Training Certificate for advancement to pay step four or higher.
Some positions may require a valid Washington Driver's License at the time of appointment with maintenance thereafter.
