The Accounting Review Officer provides independent assessments of financial, operational, and system processes relative to the parishes and selected Diocesan entities. This position provides oversight and support for the care of the temporal goods within the Diocese of Baton Rouge by providing assistance, training, and support to priests, bookkeepers, administrators, principals, and secretaries in parishes and select Diocesan entities on accounting, finance, payroll, and budget issues, diocesan reporting and procedural requirements, and internal controls. Preparation of report packages, receipt and review of parish, and to some degree, school financial reports, along with on-site reviews (some scheduled and some on an as-needed basis) allows this position to oversee the financial condition of Diocese units and the level of care for temporal goods within the Diocese. This position also serves as liaison with the external auditors for the Diocesan Administration Offices and Deposit and Loan fund audit, which requires among other things, preparation of the annual financial statements and all related schedules and support required by the audit.

Requirements

Education and Experience Requirements

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance is required and industry-recognized professional certification (CPA, CIA, CICA, etc.), particularly in the area of internal controls, is preferred.
  • At least five years of audit or related business experience, preferably but not necessarily in a non-profit setting is required. 
  • Experience in financial operations, financial analysis and/or financial planning, and a strong knowledge of internal controls processes and procedures and accounting standards also preferred.
  • Proficient experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Publisher is required.
  • Valid, current driver’s license and own, reliable transportation. 

Other Requirements

  • Strong professional and interpersonal skills demonstrating the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with others on all levels both orally and in writing. 
  • Ability to assist, train, and provide support to priests, principals, bookkeepers, and secretaries in parishes, schools, and organizations on accounting, payroll, finance, and budget issues, diocesan reporting and procedures, and internal controls.
  • Strong analytical skills, self-directed, ability to exercise good judgment in handling difficult and/or sensitive situations, ability to maintain strict level of confidentiality and discretion, ability to exercise good organizational and time management skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage projects and multiple priorities.

Ability to establish and maintain friendly and cooperative relations with employees, clergy, and parishes, schools, and other organizations the diocese supports.
