The 10 Least Stressful Jobs of 2012

Least Stressful Jobs of 2012 By Victoria Brienza

In the real world, no job is stress free. Every occupation has the potential to cause some sort of pressure for the people who do it every day. Your personality also affects whether you find a job to be stressful or not. While some workers might feel more or less stress in physically challenging situations, others might be deathly afraid of speaking in public, even though there may be very little physical danger. For example, in some surveys, people rank speaking in public as more fear-producing than undergoing a root canal or even dying.

“Our perception of a situation plays an essential role in our stress levels,” says Karen Sothers, a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) expert. “The value or meaning that we assign to an event determines if we react to it as a threat or respond to it as an opportunity.”

The level of stress or the lack of it in the workplace is different for every person. However, the intent of our Jobs Rated Report is to simply assign a relative measure of stress, so that different jobs might be compared along this continuum we all experience.

This year, Medical Records Technicians claimed the top spot for Least Stressful Jobs of 2012, but this top ranking may be short-lived.

“It’s false to say that our job isn’t stressful. There are laws and regulations coming at us left and right that need to be implemented,” says Diana Warner, a Director at the American Health Information Management Association. Warner also emphasized that with all of the regulation changes comes continual training and education.

Not everyone feels their job is stressful, though.

"If I made a client's hair purple or burned it off -- that would be stressful, but it's not like getting shot at," says Joyce Green, a Virginia hairstylist. “Most hairdressers who love their career and are passionate about it, wouldn't find it particularly stressful either." Green says that one of the most stressful parts of her job is the long hours, which can be hard on the body.

While that utopian, stress-free job that many of us dream about exists only in our mind’s eye, there are some professions to take a closer look at if you’re interested in a more stress-free environment. Check out our top picks, according to our Jobs Rated Report:

More "Busy" than "Stressful"

I'd have to say as an up and coming HIM professional this profession seems to be very "busy" rather than "stressful". I know I'll get disagreement on this but I am in the middle of internship right now and I can vouch for how busy they are and Joint Commission was out today in this facility.

get real

get a life we all have stressful jobs who are we to say mine is more stressful than yours!!!!

Seriously

Stop complaining about how stressful your job is and be thankful that you have a job. BTW...Tell your stories to my army, marine, navy, air force brothers and sisters who are currently deployed, they'll get good laughs reading them...it'll cheer them up a bit. Thanks.

Medical Record Technician

It can be a very stressful job at times. I agree with many who have already posted.

STRESS?

Try being a PHYSICIAN ASSISTANT! Talk about responsibility... Pressure from doctors, insurance companies controlling the practice of medicine, the government and insurance companies in bed together. When did it become wise for people with no medical training to dictate medical care? Why do people whine about copays when people used to actually pay for the services rendered? Medicine isn't a fast-food restaurant...You don't walk in whenever you want and tell the person who studied medicine, intensely for many years, you want a "Z-Pak" and a side of "Claritin" [and hurry up about it]!

Medical Records Technichian

Not Stressful? Where did you get your information? I do the audits for the hospital and clinics associated with the facility for JACHO to make sure we are meeting the guidelines set by this organization. If you don't pass, your Medicare/Medicaid funding is cut. It's a BIG deal! I do the coder queries where the physicians do not document accurately so you can't bill correctly. I do reports where for timeliness of dictations - JACHO dings you on this item also. I do weekly and monthly reports for specific services. As many stated above, we aren't paper pushers - we are degreed professionals who have to keep up our CEUs and adjust to new electronic records systems to get out work done. Better do more research on this profession to get real information!!!

Totally Agree!

This job is very stressful.

Every job can be stressful,

Every job can be stressful, but think about it there are a ton more jobs out there that are way more stressful. Like soldiers sacrificing their lives!! Even firfighters and even paramedics. When it comes to having someones life depending on you or losing your life that is way more stressing!!

You are so right!

You are so right!

How about golf

I thought it would be a golf caddy for sure.

I Agree

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH THIS <3

Medical Laboratory Technician not stressful!?! Yeah, right!!

I'd like whoever did the investigation on Med Lab Techs to work a week in a busy hospital lab and tell me it's NOT stressful. I've worked in the field for 7 years now, and let me tell you when a life hangs in the balance waiting on lab results, the stress is enormous. And if you think we have no deadlines, give me a break! Have you ever tried to work up blood for a transfusion for heart surgery when the patient has antibodies and finding compatible blood is about 10 times more difficult? It's not as simple as "Push 2 units of O neg". There are serious repurcussions for not getting a completely compatible unit for these patients. Have you ever attended a code blue for a 1 pound baby, waiting on chemistry values to know exactly what to do to save that child's life? Try working short on the night shift when the ER is bursting at the seams and doctors are calling every 10 minutes demanding to know when they'll get their results. And maybe this job does not require you to take work home, but it is hardly 9-5. Health care is a 24/7 industry, which means lab techs need to be available at all hours of the day. If you work in a smaller hospital, you take call. If you work in a larger one, you work shifts. I work in a larger hospital, and I've had to go into work anywhere from 6 am, to 1 pm, to 9 pm (and once I worked one of each shift in a single week!). You can't tell me that constantly changing your sleep pattern doesn't add to stress levels. Medical Lab Tech may not be on the most stressful list, but it certainly does NOT belong on the least stressful either.

Medical Technician NOT Stressful?

Whoever did the investigation on Med Lab Techs does not grasp the concept of FACTS. A reasonable supsicion drug screen seems to be in order.

Point #1: No DEADLINES? Ever heard of the term turn-around-time (TAT)? This term originated in lab specifically referring to the availability of lab results to clinicians so that they may determine treatment and diagnosis. Also, Emergency rooms are under the gun these days to move patients in and out reducing their length of stays (LOS). Lab plays a significant role in this process by establishing goals/deadlines for the availability of results to clinicians. Beyond the ED there are similar demands on the availability of results for inpatients, OR, outpatients, and testing provided to physician offices and outreach sites.

Point#2: Transfusion medicine and codes. Lab plays a vital role and is under deadlines to produce lab results in many cases 24/7.

Point#3: A medical lab technican and medical technologist are not one in the same in regards to salary and responsibility. This is not to downplay the MLT. In many medical institutions they have similar roles. The biggest difference is salary and advancement opportunities.

Yes, Medical Lab Techs may not fall on the most stressful list, but it does NOT belong on the least stressful. Dont' take my word for it. Call ASCP. Do your homework next time.

Medical Technician NOT Stressful?

What??? Medical Laboratory Scientists of the world, let’s start a revolution. Look at this new article from CNBC, http://www.cnbc.com/id/45859959/?slide=7, page 7 0f 12 and input your thoughts. Let’s set the record straight. I’ve been a MLS for 11 years now. Whoever wrote this article does not have any idea of the critical nature of our work. We constantly work against the clock and our work is the basis for any medical treatment. Let’s start a revolution!!!!!

Med Tech Oh Please Stress Really?

You have got to be kidding me you think you have a stressful job. What do you worry about all day? I have had to submit requests for medical records before and it takes months to get them. You take it as it comes and dont hurry at all. Please tell me you break a nail opening a file drawer or typing all day. Yea thats it. I have to deal with idiots like you every day. I take your crap and have to keep smiling because it's my job. I listen to the lies. I watch you steal my stuff. I turn you down when you present a stolen check or try to use a stolen C/C. I politely accept your condesending and rude behavior all day every day. An you know what I still have deadlines to meet and merchandise to present. I watch as you allow your children ransack my store and destroy my associates hard work. I call the police when you beat each other up over a video game. I laugh hardily inside when you think you pulled the wool over our eyes and "got away with it" I tire of your ignorance and allowed you to get the return for used product or stolen merchandise because it was an insignificant drop in the bucket for the day. You see I have a business to run.
I see you abuse your children. I see you degrade your family members. I see you try to cheat and lie about just about every thing. I know what you have for diner. I see you cheating on your husbands and wifes. I see you buying pregnancy tests when your 12 and 13. I catch you stealing them also. I see you teaching your children to steal from me. I give you my attention as you try to distract me so your accomplice can make a break for it. Yet for all the bad I see I still see the good in humanity. I see you turn in a $100 bill on xmas eve so a family can have christmas. I see you pay off a less fortunate families lay away for hundreds of dollars. I see you give your parking spots to those in need. I see you helping the elderly.I see you teaching your children about money and needs vs desires. I see the parents struggling to give thier children a better chance and a better life. I see respect and I see nurchuring families. I see love and I see hope. I see you and I see over 3 million of you every year. And yes I see though clean clear glasses with out the rose tint. I have a a bias to help you "Save Money, Live Better" I am the face of the millions of walmart associates that help you every day.

What the hell are you talking

What the hell are you talking about? A records clerk or a Medical Laboratory Technologist? Medical clerk is not the same thing as running clinical tests in a hospital laboratory. You're babbling on about how stressful it is to be a cashier or whatever at Wallyworld, when the topic is about stressful jobs. As a technologist you have reader boards ticking away the minutes for chemistry or hematology labs which the ER is waiting on, you are differentiating cells of a toddler with cancer so the doctor can provide the best medications, you are running tests that have the potential to tell a pregnant mom her baby has genetic defects (so don't get that one wrong kids), you are crossmatching blood and finding all sorts of hidden antibodies that have to be properly identified so as not to prevent a severe reaction (i.e., death), etc, etc, etc.

I'm not saying it is the most stressful job around, but I've never filed a billing record in my life. Don't confuse the different jobs.

And working a Wallmart must totally suck, that's why it has been three years since I've set foot in one. The whole place disgusts me. I'd rather spend 20% more someplace else or go without. Last time I was in there it felt like I needed a decontamination bath afterwards.....

Confused

I guess I'm confused as to how you KNOW that every single customer you have is a medical records technician. Just wondering

I disagree strongly with this

I disagree strongly with this survey obviously they did not poll that many people in the field. I think it's a slap in the face when they are still using the term "Medical Records Technician" instead of"Health Information Professional". We are more than "glorified paper pushers" we have degrees and credentials to maintain. If your a supervisor or director of a Health Information Department you know how stressful it can be just trying to stay ahead with the everchanging technology advances!

Med Tech is Stressful

If you worked under the thumbs of big insurance companies like I do I think you'd find being a Medial Records Tech a lot more stressful than this article claims. The amount of paperwork is growing and the time we have to process it is shrinking. I work in a small medial clinic and although I really enjoy my job it is a very fast moving and stressful job more often than not.

Med Tech is stressful

I have worked in the Medical Records field since 1992, and it has always been a stressful environment. Where did you get your statistics for this piece?

Really?

all your comments are insulting to a deployed soldier, sailor, marine, airman who worries if they will ever go back home alive. Please...stop whining, complaining. be thankkful you have a job and that is because of the men and women who have protected our freedoms thru multiple wars (past and present).
