December 2009: U.S. Employment Activity

After declines in September and October, December saw the second straight month of positive job growth, although the national volume of managerial openings online increased by only 0.2 points to an Index score of 73.9. However, considering that the holidays are typically a slow period for hiring, this is a welcome improvement after a year of heavy losses.

READING THE INDEX: The CareerCast.com/JobSerf Employment Index measures all Index scores against a base year of 2007, where the number of job listings available online during each month of 2007 = 100 points. This means that a score that is < 100 indicates the number of job listings for a given month is less than during the same month in 2007, while a value > 100 means that more jobs are available than were during the same month in 2007.

That said, this performance is still 26.1 points worse than levels seen in December 2007, meaning that even barring any new setbacks, a complete job market recovery is likely several months away.
