January 2013: Employment By Region

Managerial hiring in the Southeast buoyed the national averages in January.

The region improved its index score from December 2012 by a hefty 5.3 points, to 97.2. The improvement puts the Southeast well above its average of the last two years: 90.7 in January 2011 (+6.5) and 82.3 in January 2012 (+14.9).

The nation’s other four regions experienced change within three points – plus or minus – of their December 2012 figures. The Midwest’s index fell 2.9 points, largely due to a sizable tumble in managerial hiring in Cleveland.

The city’s index fell 11%, most in the nation. Cincinnati’s increase in hiring helped somewhat offset the losses in Cleveland. The Queen City gained three index points, or 5%. The nation’s largest growth was seen in Dallas, which added five points for a 7% increase. Dallas dropped every month since September before January’s growth.
